How to Stop Domain Spam, Fraud and Theft

by Jenny Dempsey

pdr_guardRing, ring, ring! A telemarketer calling from an irrelevant domain registration company.

Screeeechhh! Another fake domain renewal notification fax.

Wondering why you are the target for these uncalled-for notifications? Let’s break it down:

  • You register a domain name and create an account.
  • The contact information on file in your account publishes to the WhoIs Database.
  • The WhoIs Database is accessible online 24/7. A user simply types in a domain name, punches the “Enter” key and BAM! Your contact information displays on their screen.

Contact information online also places you at risk for unwanted Spam, fraud and theft.

Why does this happen? Check out what the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has to say:

ICANN requires accredited registrars to collect and provide free public access to the name of the registered domain name and its nameservers and registrar, the date the domain was created and when its registration expires, and the contact information for the Registered Name Holder, the technical contact, and the administrative contact.

But, there is a way to avoid the unnecessary telemarketer calls and fake renewal notifications! Drum roll please…

Private Domain Registration!

We’ll add ourselves as a proxy (substitute) for your domain name to help avoid these issues. Here’s what you’ll see on a WhoIs lookup in place of your personal contact information:
